| At Bethel,
our purpose as a church family is expressed as follows:
| "
To develop fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
" |
We describe
"fully devoted followers" in this way:
Believers
They have sincerely repented of their sin, put their trust in Jesus and his death, burial and resurrection, and have publicly declared their faith by being baptized. [Acts 2:38; Romans 10:9-10]
Spirit-Filled
They yield to the Spirit. They live by the Spirit. They keep step with the Spirit. The Spirit's
presence is obvious in their lives, making them fruitful by empowering them for service and transforming their character.
[Galations 5:13-25]
Loving
As loved people, they are loving people. [John 13:34-35; 1 John 4:9-11]
Growing
Those who follow Christ fully grow in grace and in their knowledge of Christ Jesus. They grow in
their relationship with God: their love for God, fear of God, obedience to God, service for God, and
knowledge of God. And they grow in Christ-like character: moral purity, holiness, integrity, humility, compassion,
and mutual submission. [1 Peter 2:2; 2 Peter 3:18]
Disciplined
Fully devoted followers integrate biblical disciplines into
their lives such as: Bible reading and meditation, prayer, fasting,
regular church attendance and giving. [1 Cor. 9:24-27; 2 Tim. 1:7]
Connected
Fully devoted followers are faithfully commited to and active in the life of our church family.
They are involved together in service, growth, worship and fellowship. [Phil. 2:1-4; Hebrews 10:24-25]
Witnesses
Our Lord called us to be his witnesses. We represent Christ to our world
striving to give credible personal testimony to the reality of Jesus and his Gospel. [Acts 1:8]
Stewards
Fully devoted followers of Jesus submit to him in how they manage
their time, abilities, and resources. Inherent in stewardship is the biblical practice of tithing.
[Proverbs 3:9-10]
Servants
Jesus' followers act like Jesus who adopted the role of a servant and went about doing good. They
serve Christ and others both in and outside the church by devoting themselves to good works.
[Philippians 2:5-7; Galations 5:13; 6:9-10; Titus 3:8; Ephesians 2:8-10]
Loving and faithful to their families
Parents demonstrate personal responsibility for the spiritual, emotional, social, mental and physical well being of their children, disciplining them in the faith and encouraging them to become vital members of Christ's body, the church. Marriage parters are faithful to their vows, treating each other with love and respect. Everyone appropriately honors, loves, and responds to the needs of parents, siblings and their extended family. [Ephesians 5:22-6:4]
